Here's some general advice for getting the most out of Finnegans Wake, based on my experience: Personally, I've been able to get by with just English and the footnotes (to clarify: Finnegans Wake doesn't have explanatory footnotes, you have to read along with a companion book if you want those). But you don't need to learn a foreign language to read Finnegans Wake. By all means, learn a foreign language for the sake of learning a foreign language.
